Monday's Class 11-7-11

Today the class answer a question when they came in involving what was necessary for there to be life on Earth.  We then as a class discussed that question and other relevant questions about that topic.  We also went over the objectives from the test taken on Friday that most students missed.

If you have any books that talk about the planets and the solar systems as a whole please bring those to class tomorrow and Wednesday.

Thursday's Class 11-3-11 & Review Help

Today the class went over and did the review for the exam during tomorrow's class.
Here is a guide to filling out the review.  Remember that these are not the exact questions and that you need to understand the concepts included.

Human Impact on the Environment and Catastrophic Events Review

*A change to the environment that has a negative effect on the living things is called?
Pollution

*Exhaust fumes from automobiles are an example of what?
Pollution

*List the benefits of a forest fire
Forest fires enrich the soil

*A cloud of ash from a volcanic eruption blocking the sun would have what kind of effect on the environment and climate of an area?
Would cause the temperature to decrease and cause lower rates of photosynthesis

*How would drought affect animals in an ecosystem?
Would cause the animals to find another habitat to live in because of the lack of food (plants) to eat
*List the ways a large meteorite affect the earth.
Blocks out the sun, causing the Earth's temperature to decrease
*Define Weathering
Rock segments are broken down either chemically or mechanically (physically)
*Define Erosion
Rock Sediment is removed and carried away
*Describe what Abrasion is
Rock sediments rub against another rock segment causing it to erode.
*Explain what ice wedging does to weather rock
Water freezes in the joints of rock and widens the rock joints.  This cycle repeats itself several times.  Mostly happens in the Northern part of the U.S.
*How does oxidation occur?
The iron in the rock mixes with oxygen and water and starts to make the rock a reddish color and also cause to become softer than before

*List the agents of erosion
Gravity, Running water, Glaciers, Waves, Wind

*What will happen to large rough rocks in a riverbed over many years?
They will become smooth and more rounded over time
*How does vegetation influence the rate of erosion of land?
The more vegetation there is that less likely chance you will have a big amount of erosion
*What would have the biggest change on the amount of water available to people in an area that depend on underground water for their water supply?
The amount of rainfall that area receives would have the biggest impact upon an area
*What process in the natural world produces chemical energy from radiant energy?
Photosynthesis

*Describe the differences between Mechanical and Chemical Weathering.
Mechanical weathering- doesn't change the composition of the rock
Chemical weathering- does change the composition of the rock

*Which biome is most likely to be affected by erosion caused by wind?
 Desert
*Describe what deposition is and give examples of it.
Deposition is where the agents of erosion lay down sediments.
