Thursday's Class 4/26/12

Today the students took notes over and practiced punnett squares.  There is a vocabulary quiz tomorrow over the words we covered Monday.

In case you missed those or need help with the definitions of a few of them here they are:

DNA- The genetic material that carries information about an organism and that is passed from parent to offspring.

Gene- A segment of DNA on a chromosome that codes for a specific trait.

Traits- A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes.

Heredity- The passing of traits from parents to offspring

Genetics- The scientific study of heredity

Chromosome- A threadlike cellular structure that carries the information that controls inherited characteristics.

Sexual Reproduction- The reproductive process that involves two parents who combine their genetic material to produce a new organism, which differs from both parents.

Asexual Reproduction- The production of offspring by a single parent, without the union of a sperm cell and an egg cell.

Allele- The different forms of a gene

Dominant Allele- An allele whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present

Recessive Allele- An allele that is masked when a dominant allele is present

Monday's Class 4/23/12

Today the students worked on vocabulary for their vocabulary quiz Friday.  The words that they need to know for that quiz are: DNA, Gene, Traits, Heredity, Genetics, Chromosome, Sexual Reproduction, Asexual Reproduction, Allele, Dominant Allele, Recessive Allele.  It will be a matching quiz so you will need to really know these definitions.

Tomorrow and Wednesday the students have the STAAR test.  Get some rest and eat a good breakfast.  Most importantly GOOD LUCK and do your best!!!

Friday's Class 4/20/12

Today the students were to complete questions about the adaptations they simulated yesterday in class during the lab.  There were 4 questions over each they had to discuss in a paper.

Thursday Class 4/19/12

Today the students went through the adaptations lab.  They observed different adaptations and had to pick from a list the adaptation and organism that best fit the adaption simulation they performed at different stations.  Tomorrow they will write about these adaptations.  This lab will count for two grades in the grade book.

Wednesday 4/18/12

Today the students worked on "What caused this" cards that went into their science spirals.  The had to read a passage and figure out what caused the sickness/disease, symptoms the person felt, how did the body respond to the sickness/disease and how do they know that.
It was to completed and put into the science spiral and the spiral were then taken up for a spiral check.

Tuesday 4/17/12

Today in class we discussed Fever and Vomit and how our body adjust itself to homeostasis.  You can find those notes at my school website: Mr. Reynolds' School Website

Spiral Check Wednesday

Tuesday we will be having a spiral check.  I will be checking for all the IN's and notes since the last spiral check.  The dates for the IN's I will be checking are 4/16/12, 4/3/12, 4/2/12.  The other information I will be checking for is the "Where are They?" human body notes, the Endocrine crossword puzzle, and the body systems question diagram.

4/16/12 IN:  Define Stimulus and give an example of an external and an internal stimulus.  Answer: Stimulus is a change in an organisms surroundings that causes the organism to react. External stimulus example: temperature  Internal stimulus example: infection/fever

4/3/12 IN: Which gland produces a growth hormone that controls growth and homeostasis?  Answer: Pituitary Gland

4/2/12 IN: List the 5 functions of the skin  Answer: Prevents loss of water, Protects body from injury and infection, regulates the body's temperature, eliminates waste, gathers information about the environment, produces vitamin D

Monday's Class 4/16/12

Today the students watched a video "LIFE" and had to find 10 adaptations from it.
