Ways Drugs Affect the Brain

I showed a poerpoint in my health classes over the ways that drugs legal and illegal affect the brain.  Here is the link to that presentation: Ways Drugs Affect the Brain

Thursday September 27, 2012

Today the students finished up their work out of the textbook over the periodic table and then we graded the assignment as a class.  Some classes finished early and those classes began the "Ways to Seperate Mixtures" PowerPoint.  you can find the link to that presentation on the previous blog post.

Extra credit for science test Thursday

Get your parent or gaurdian to sign your completed test review at the top of your front page.  When you turn it in tomorrow I will check to see if it is signed and give you an extra 10 points onto your test grade.

Test Review

Physical Properties Test Review

1)      When would a science student need to wear safety goggles?  At all times in the lab

2)      Elizabeth was heating a beaker of water on a hot plate. What pieces of safety equipment should she be using? Safety goggles, gloves, apron,

3)      What state of matter takes the shape of its container? liquid

4)      John is building a simple electrical circuit that can be used for light energy. What materials will John need? A metal conductor, battery, light bulb

5)      A circuit is constructed using a 6-volt battery, copper wires, and a bell. Another circuit is constructed using a 9-volt battery, string, and a bell. The first circuit produced a sound. Why did the other circuit not produce a sound? The second one did not have a conductor to allow the electrical energy to pass through it.

6)      Draw a complete and working electrical circuit.

7)      A magnet has been dipped into each substance. Which substance is most likely coffee?

The coffee is the magnet that has nothing on it

8)      How would you separate a mixture of iron fillings and pepper? By using a magnet

9)      Where would you place a thermometer when measuring the temperature of a solution? Inside the solution

10)  A student plans to boil water in an experiment. The student gets all the needed safety equipment from the teacher.  Lists all the tools the student needs to measure the boiling point of water? Thermometer

11)  What is likely to happen when a pot of water begins to boil on a stove top? The water begins to heat up and bubbles begin to form filled with the gas form of water.  Steam then rises out of the pot of water showing the transformation of water as a liquid into water as a gas.

12)  What is the freezing point of water in Celsius? degrees

13)  When using a thermometer do we use the Celsius or Fahrenheit? Celsius

14)  If a ball is floating in a cup of water does it have a higher or lower density than the water? It has a lower density than the water because it is floating.

15)  A piece of copper is placed on a hot plate for one minute. When the copper is picked up with tweezers, the copper is as hot as the hot plate. The copper is said be a ________. Conductor

16)  Which of the following are good electrical conductors (penny, rubber band, shoelace, or wooden toothpick)? Only the penny is because it is the only metal.

17)  A student examines a bar made of an unknown material. The material is shiny, hard, and feels cool to the touch. The student discovers that the bar conducts electricity. What is the bar most likely made of? Metal

18)  Why is a toaster's electrical cord covered in plastic? So it can insulate the electrical conductor inside of the wire allowing you to touch the cord without getting shocked.

19)  Do gas molecules have definite shapes or do they move around freely?  They move very freely

20)  List some examples of liquid turning into solids? Water to ice, liquid cement into solid cement

21)  Draw a model of how liquid molecules would look like in a container.

22)  Understand how this picture shows a solid, liquid and gas.  The solid is the ice cubes in the drink, the liquid is the actual fluid you would drink and the gas is the bubbles floating to the top of the cup.

At what point on the diagram does water change from a liquid into a gas?

23)  What is typically happening when a solid is changing to a gas?  Is heat added to the solid or is heat removed from the solid?  Heat is typically being added to the solid

24)  Some girls are using a curling iron to fix their hair. It is very hot when plugged in for a while. If you wanted to protect your skin, what action should you choose when picking it up? You should pick up the plastic portion of the curling iron so you will be holding the insulated portion and not the conduction part.

25)  On question #22, do the upward arrows represent an upward increase in temperature or decrease in temperature?  Increase in temperature

I showed an animation of the flow of blood throughout the heart, here is a link to that animation:Heart Blood Flow Animation

Science Spiral Quiz Tomorrow

There is a science spiral quiz tomorrow.  Here is what the quiz will consist of:

1) How many lab stattions are in the science lab?
2) What is the third science safety rule we listed in the safety rules defined activity?
3) What is the fourth item listed on the table of contents?
4) What is the answer to the second question listed on September 10th Warm-up?
5) What question was asked on the September 11th Warm-up?
6) Name the diagram you were asked ot draw on Septemebr 14th.
7) What is the title of the notes you took on September 14th?
8) How many items are you supposed to have at this time in your table of contents?
9) Where is the fire extingusher located in the science lab?
10) What is the first physical property we listed in the notes "Physical Properties"?

Monday September 17, 2012

Today the students worked in their just given workbooks.  They completed them during class and it will be graded tomorrow after our spiral quiz.

Today the students and I went through some notes and discussed electric conductors and insulators.
They had to draw the following diagram in their notes:

Thursday September 13, 2012

Today the students worked through a lab where they investigated the solubility of different solutions

Wednesday September 12, 2012

The students and I discussed states of matter today.  We discussed how matter can change from one state to the other.  We then started watching a video over physical properties of matter where the students were required to write down 10 facts from the video.

Monday September 10, 2012

Today the students and I discussed physical properties and how molecules are arranged in solids, liquids, and gases.  Here is a link to the two videos we watched: Molecules in solids and Molecules in liquids

Todaty the students took notes over Physical Properties.  We did not complete them and will have to Thursday.

I will not be here Wednesday and the students will be working on a chapter overview of physical properties while I am out.

Friday August 31, 2012

Today the students took a science benchmark.  It was difficult becasue the students have not been exposed to the information in it yet.  We will be taking that benchmark a few more times throughout the year and the results should get considerably better.

Thursday August 30, 2012

Today the students and I went over the science lab safety rules agian and the students had to come up wit hreason for why the rules were in place.  Afterwards the students watched a video over lab safety.
