Thursday's Class 4/26/12

Today the students took notes over and practiced punnett squares.  There is a vocabulary quiz tomorrow over the words we covered Monday.

In case you missed those or need help with the definitions of a few of them here they are:

DNA- The genetic material that carries information about an organism and that is passed from parent to offspring.
Gene- A segment of DNA on a chromosome that codes for a specific trait.
Traits- A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes.
Heredity- The passing of traits from parents to offspring
Genetics- The scientific study of heredity
Chromosome- A threadlike cellular structure that carries the information that controls inherited characteristics.
Sexual Reproduction- The reproductive process that involves two parents who combine their genetic material to produce a new organism, which differs from both parents.
Asexual Reproduction- The production of offspring by a single parent, without the union of a sperm cell and an egg cell.
Allele- The different forms of a gene
Dominant Allele- An allele whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present
Recessive Allele- An allele that is masked when a dominant allele is present
