Tuesday, November 24, 2015

Tuesday November 24, 2015

Today the students worked on this website: THE FUSE BOX CIRCUIT BUILDER

When done with that they also had a chance to do either the extra credit of view the digital lesson over circuits: HOW DOES AN ELECTRIC CIRCUIT WORK VIRTUAL LAB

Monday, November 23, 2015

Extra Credit

Due next Tuesday December 1st
It will be worth 2 free 100 homework replacement grades of 15 extra points on the last test grade.

Create a google slides document and share it with me.

The slides document must contain at least 7 slides.
It must contain information regarding series and parallel circuits
It must also contain information over our new objective: I can demonstrate that the flow of electricity in a circuit requires a complete path through which an electric current can pass and can produce light, heat and sound.

Monday November 23, 2015

Today we completed a circuit lab.  Below you can see some pictures of the students working hard on it.

Tomorrow we will have a spiral quiz over warm-ups we have done and a notes quiz over the notes below.

How do electric circuits, conductors and insulators work?
Some go with the flow?
-Conductors- Allow electricity to easily pass through them
-Insulators-prevents the flow of electricity
-Examples of conductors and insulators-
                -Copper Wire=Conductor
                -Electric Gloves= insulator
                -Electrical tape= insulator
                -Lightning Rod=conductor
A path to charge?
An electric circuit is a complete pathway made of conductors through which electricity cab flow.

Devices in a circuit such as lamps, buzzers or appliances are called resistances or loads.

Which path to take?
Series Circuit- An electric current that has only one pathway to follow to and from the energy source.

Parallel Circuit-Contains two or more paths for electric charges to follow.

Home Circuits?
Your home electrical system is a small part of a larger system that includes your city, state and national region.

Many of the forms of energy that you see around your house begin as electricity.

Today the students completed page 193 and 194 out of their textbook and turned it in.
They also took notes themselves over pages 198-205. Below you will find my notes that I took along side theirs.
We will be having a 5 question over those pages tomorrow.

Thermal Energy

* Lively Particles
     * Kinetic Energy- energy of motion
     * Thermal Energy- the total amount of kinetic energy of particles in a substance.
     * Temperature- is the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance

*Move it Around
     *Heat- transfer of energy
     * Conduction- transfer of energy between particles that are in contact. Ex: skillet on a stove
     * Radiation- transfer of energy in waves without matter to carry it
     * Convection- transfer of energy by currents in a liquid or gas

*Going to the source
     * Solar Radiation- most important energy source on Earth
     * Combustion- occurs when a fuel rapidly combines with oxygen
     * Geothermal Energy- thermal energy naturally produced under the Earth's surface

*Uses of Energy
     * Energy from the sun- water runs through pipes in a solar panel where it is heated by solar radiation. The water is then stored until it is needed.
*Geothermal Energy- 1st step- hot ground water is pumped to the surface where it is changed to steam. 2nd step- steam turns a turbine (fan like device) 3rd step- turbine turns a generator (machine that uses magnets to change mechanical energy into electricity

*Thermal Energy from Combustion
*fossil fuels are burned and when they combust they generate power

Cell Project Extra Credit

5th Grade Science Cell Project

Date Due- 5/27/14
Essential Questions: How are animal and plant cells alike or different? What are
organelles? What organelles are found in a cell (plant/animal)? What are the functions of
those organelles?
Assignment: Construct a three-dimensional model and/or poster of a Plant OR Animal Cell.
Directions:
1. Decide whether you want to make a model or poster of an animal or plant cell.
2. Find creative materials from around the house that could be used for the cell organelles. **NO
FOODS please; dry goods such as rice, pasta and beans are fine though. Suggestions for materials:
pipe cleaners, string, plastic beads, balloons, toothpicks, playdoh, construction paper, clay.
3. Decide what material will represent each part of the cell. Use your notes, textbook, examples on
my website and diagram handouts to help you construct your model. Also, I have projects from
previous years on display in the science lab that you may look at for ideas.
4. Before you begin you should make a rough draft of the design on a sheet of paper listing the
materials that you will use.
Model/Poster Requirements:
____ Your model must have the following organelles correctly labeled with a description of its function to the cell. You may use a key diagram instead of directly labeling on the cell if you wish.
Plant Cell:- Chloroplast, cell wall, cell membrane, vacuole, mitochondria, nucleus, cytoplasm
Animal Cell:- Cell membrane, vacuole, mitochondria, nucleus, cytoplasm
_____ You must also complete the 2 questions (in complete sentences) on the rubric.
______ The rubric must be turned in with the model to receive full credit.
______ The assignment must be turned in by the date due to receive full credit.

Grades will be based on the following questions:
______Is your name on the project?
______Is the cell type identified?
______Is your model a 3-D replica of a plant or animal cell?
______Are all the organelles included? (7 for plants cells, 5 for animal cells)
______Are the organelles correctly labeled? Each organelle must be labeled with its name and function.
______Are the relationships between the parts (if any) shown correctly?
______Are the materials used acceptable?
______Is the written component neat, error free, and filled with all of the cell organelles
 and their functions?
______Was the project turned in on time with the rubric and questions included?
Examples:

You must answer the following questions and turn in with your project and rubric.

1. How are plant and animal cells similar and how are they different?

2. In your own words, which part of a cell do you consider to be the most important part
and why?

Tuesday March 24, 2015

These are the guidelines for the project.  It is Due March 27, 2015, this Friday.

Guidelines:
Ø  Choose one insect species from the list below which you will create a life cycle display.
Ø  For the display, draw, trace, or copy pictures of the insect in its adult form, egg and nymph forms (if you have chosen an insect that goes through incomplete metamorphosis), or its adult form, egg, larva, and pupa (if you have chosen an insect that goes through complete metamorphosis).
Ø  Record the insect’s common name, scientific name, and range (where it lives), which you should be able to indicate on a classroom globe or map.

Ø  Mantises, Moth, Walking sticks, Butterflies, Roaches, Beetles , Aphids, Wasps, Damselflies, Flies, Grasshoppers, Ants, Katydids, Bees, Water bugs

In addition to creating a display as described above, you need to write a one-page report that answers these questions:
ü  To which insect family does it belong?
ü  Where does it live (its range)?
ü  What kind of habitat does it prefer?
ü  What does it eat?
ü  Do any insects or other animals prey upon it?

ü  At any point or points in its life cycle, does the insect have a major effect on the environment or on humans?
