Today the students completed page 193 and 194 out of their textbook and turned it in.
They also took notes themselves over pages 198-205. Below you will find my notes that I took along side theirs.
We will be having a 5 question over those pages tomorrow.
Thermal Energy
* Lively Particles
* Kinetic Energy- energy of motion
* Thermal Energy- the total amount of kinetic energy of particles in a substance.
* Temperature- is the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance
*Move it Around
*Heat- transfer of energy
* Conduction- transfer of energy between particles that are in contact. Ex: skillet on a stove
* Radiation- transfer of energy in waves without matter to carry it
* Convection- transfer of energy by currents in a liquid or gas
*Going to the source
* Solar Radiation- most important energy source on Earth
* Combustion- occurs when a fuel rapidly combines with oxygen
* Geothermal Energy- thermal energy naturally produced under the Earth's surface
*Uses of Energy
* Energy from the sun- water runs through pipes in a solar panel where it is heated by solar radiation. The water is then stored until it is needed.
*Geothermal Energy- 1st step- hot ground water is pumped to the surface where it is changed to steam. 2nd step- steam turns a turbine (fan like device) 3rd step- turbine turns a generator (machine that uses magnets to change mechanical energy into electricity
*Thermal Energy from Combustion
*fossil fuels are burned and when they combust they generate power
